Massage Therapy
Therapeutic massage has many benefits and is
often an integral part of treatments at our offices. Our staff
Chiropractors may recommend massage in combination with chiropractic
adjustments as part of an overall treatment strategy. Massage therapy
may be covered by medical insurances when prescribed by your
Chiropractic Physician. Massage increases blood and lymph circulation,
which helps to clear metabolic waste, and helps deliver oxygen and
nutrients to muscles. When muscles are over-worked or strained from
physical activity or even improper posture, they can hold the bodies’
byproducts of overuse such as lactic acid. These by-products, or
metabolites, are partly responsible for the soreness felt after unusual,
excessive, or repetitive activity or exercise. Massage can help
eliminate these metabolites and decrease muscular soreness.
Massage also helps to decrease pain and
muscle tightness thus helping to maintain spinal alignment. Our daily
lives, which often include prolonged periods of time working at a
computer, promote tightness of some muscles, and weakness of others. One
reason for tight muscles is that they are weak and therefore overworked.
After therapeutic massage decreases such muscle tightness, specific
stretches and exercises can help to strengthen the muscle and prevent
tightness, called hypertonicty, from reoccurring.
A recent study conducted and published in
Sweden suggests that massage does more than just ease away your stress;
but can also have a positive impact on your blood pressure, heart and
respiration. The study found that “Massage reduces the heart rate by
decreasing sympathetic nervous activity and evoking a compensatory
decreased parasympathetic nervous activity in order to maintain
autonomic balance.”
