Headaches are a sign that something in your body is out of balance. Pain relievers may temporarily hide the pain, but the cause of the headache remains. Our goal as chiropractors is to find and treat the underlying physical cause of the headache.
Migraine headaches, the most common type of vascular headache, involve abnormal sensitivity of arteries in the brain to various triggers resulting in rapid changes in the artery size. Migraines are mostly felt as a severe throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. Migraines may also be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, irritability and visual disturbances. Sensitivity to light and sound is common during a migraine; therefore, many people have the desire to lie down in a dark and quiet room.
Migraine headaches are frequently triggered by stress, chocolate, caffeine, MSG, smoking and hormonal changes. Discovering and avoiding your specific ‘triggers’ as well as chiropractic care and acupuncture can help relieve migraine headaches.
Tension headaches are much more common than migraines and are effectively treated with Chiropractic care including manipulation, massage therapy and acupuncture. Many headaches are caused from misalignments or subluxations in the neck. These cervicogenic headaches frequently arise from pressure on the nerves and joints of the upper cervical spine. Muscle tension and myofascial trigger points, especially at the base of the skull (suboccipital muscles), neck and upper back also cause headaches. Therapies to decrease muscle tension and restore normal spinal alignment and mobility are key to treating tension headaches. Massage therapy is often an integral part of the treatment plan. Exercises to relieve strain on overworked postural muscles help prevent the headaches from recurring.
