News from Dr. Kruse - Knee Pain

Knee Pain Relief with Chiropractic Care/Cox® Flexion-Distraction

knee3 273598058

Knee pain is a pain. Pain meds and surgical procedures abound while a new non-surgical chiropractic approach is showing promising results. Principles of Cox® Technic flexion distraction and decompression - a technique used in clinic all the time for back and neck pain relief - were adapted for use with knee pain. They proved successful in relieving knee pain. Overall, patients' mean pain scores dropped from 7.7 to 1.8 on a 10 point scale (with 10 being the worst pain) in a mean of 5.3 visits over 3 weeks. Acute knee pain patients' pain scores dropped even more from a mean of 8.1 to 1.1 in 4.8 treatments in 2.4 weeks. Chronic knee pain patients' scores dropped from 7.5 to 2.2 in 5.4 treatments in 3.3 weeks. None of the patients experienced any adverse reactions.  It's gentle, relieving, and comfortable. Listen to a PODCAST with the author of this paper about his clinical experience in treating knee pain. This is an exciting addition to our chiropractic care!

TIP OF THE MONTH:

A simple series of hip abductor exercises helped reduce pain and improve function for a group of older chronic low back pain sufferers. Easy!
Bring your painful hips and knees as well as backs and necks to Chiropractic Care! We're ready to help!

News From Dr. Kruse - Yard Work Safety

ccare cc fall web

Before you rev up the lawnmower or reach for your rake this fall, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) cautions you to consider the possible consequences: upper or lower back strain, neck strain and pain in the shoulders.

Just as playing football or golf can injure your body, the twisting, turning, bending and reaching of mowing and raking can also cause injury if your body is unprepared. Like an athlete, if you leap into something without warming up or knowing how to do it properly, the chances of injury increase. To prevent unnecessary strain and pain, consider these simple tips before you get started:

*    Wear supportive shoes. Good foot and arch support can prevent some back strain.
*    Stand as straight as possible, keep your head up as you rake or mow.
*    When it's still warm outside, avoid the heat. If you're a morning person, get the work done before 10 a.m. Otherwise, do your chores after 6 p.m.
*    When raking, use a "scissors" stance: right foot forward and left foot back for a few minutes, then reverse, putting your left foot forward and right foot back.
*    Bend at the knees, not the waist, as you pick up yard equipment or piles of leaves or grass from the grass catcher. Make the piles small to decrease the possibility of back strain.
*    Wear a hat, shoes and protective glasses. To avoid blisters, try wearing gloves. If you have asthma or allergies, wear a mask.
*    Drink lots of water before and after your work.

Tips on Using Outdoor Equipment

The equipment available today for lawn and leaf management can turn the average homeowner into a lawn specialist overnight. But the use of weed trimmers, leaf blowers and hedge clippers also has sent many aspiring landscapers to the office of their local doctor of chiropractic.
ACA cautions that using this equipment can result in back and neck pain, as well as more serious muscular strains and tears. The repetitive motion that your body undergoes when using such equipment can create a host of mechanical problems within the body. It is essential to operate your equipment properly. If you do not, the pounding your body endures may be multiplied. The following tips can help you safely enjoy a productive day in the yard:

Simple Stretches

While it is critical to operate yard equipment safely, it is equally important to prepare your body for the work you are about to do. To help avoid injury, be sure to include a warm-up/cool-down period that involves stretching. Breathe in and out slowly throughout each stretching exercise until the muscle is stretched to its furthest point. At that point, hold your breath in; when you relax, breathe out. Stretch gently and smoothly. Do not bounce or jerk your body in any way and stretch as far as you can comfortably. You should not feel pain. Get the most out of the time you spend in the yard with these stretches:
*    Stand up and prop your heel on a back door step or stool with your knee slightly bent. Bend forward until you feel a slight pull at the back of the thigh, called the hamstring. You may need to stabilize yourself by holding on to a garage door handle or sturdy tree branch. Hold the position for 20 seconds, then relax. Do it once more, and then repeat with the other leg.
*    Stand up and put your right hand against a wall or other stable surface. Bend your left knee and grab your ankle with your left hand. Pull your heel toward your buttocks to stretch your quadriceps muscles at the front of your thigh. Hold that position for 20 seconds, relax and do it again. Repeat with the other leg.
*    Weave your fingers together above your head with your palms up. Lean to one side for 10 seconds to stretch the side of your upper body, then reverse. Repeat two or three times.
*    "Hug your best friend"- Wrap your arms around yourself after letting your breath out and rotate to one side as far as you can go. Hold for 10 seconds; then reverse. Repeat two or three times.

Chiropractic Non-Surgical Relief for a Disc Herniation in the Neck

disc herniation neck 368328122

There are best-evidence guidelines for most professions and especially healthcare these days. Chiropractic care is part of it all as is back pain and neck pain management. Such guidelines present a base for physicians like your Chicago and Homewood chiropractor to practice and for patients to see that they are being treated with the best evidence-based care. Guidelines for neck pain due to cervical disc herniation indicate an 8 to 12 week wait before surgical intervention which is just enough time for Dr. Ralph Kruse to potentially prevent back and neck surgery for many.
Chiropractic Care is devoted to chiropractic patient education. Chiropractic Care makes sure patients are familiar with their spinal condition, comprehend the treatment plan to reduce pain, and accept their role in getting, keeping and supporting the relief so that they don't have to experience arm pain or neck pain any longer than they have to or need to undergo neck surgery.
In 8 weeks, Chiropractic Care can do wonders with Cox Technic. Dr. Ralph Kruse published a retrospective review of 39 patients treated with Cox Technic protocols for the cervical spine in patients with cervical radiculopathy (arm pain). The mean number of treatments to deliver relief was 13.2. In 10 weeks, Cox Technic delivers a favorable clinical outcome that lasts! Numerous other studies, some published by Dr. Kruse, demonstrate relief of the symptomatic cervical spine disc herniation with radiculopathy using conservative Chiropractic Care. We can effectively treat neck pain and arm pain due to cervical disc herniation with pain relief as the end result. The Chicago treatment plan for cervical spine pain is ready for you!

News from Dr. Kruse...Back Pain Relief!

cc may 2017 59022568

Pain Relief with Chiropractic Cox® Technic

Cox® Technic research shows a 17% increase in spinal disc height in addition to the 28% increase in area where the nerves exit the spine. It shows a drop in intradiscal pressures to as low as a -192 mmHg which helps decrease pressure from herniated discs and improves nutrition to the discs so they can heal. Traction effectively increases the disc height of lower lumbar spine discs, again helping relieve pressure on pain-sensitive nerves.

Flexion Distraction (aka Cox Technic distraction manipulation) relieves neuropathic pain, pain that goes into the legs that often accompanies low back pain. This radiation of pain, numbness, or tingling down the leg is called Sciatica. The good news is that non-thrust, non-drug spinal manipulation like Cox Technic is often used to manage low back pain. Just one month of Cox Technic relieves pain in chronic low back pain patients with leg pain compared to those without leg pain. Great news! A new rat study reaffirms that using Cox Technic offers short-term pain-relief similar to that in human clinical studies. That's why it's used!

Further, spinal manipulation influences pain regulators in the nervous system like substance-p, neurotensin, oxytocin and interleukin levels as well as cortisol ("the stress hormone") after treatment. That's a goal of chiropractic treatment: to calm the nervous system when it's affected by pain.

Back pain relief is possible with chiropractic care.
